Point Panic

Hey Y’all,

How’s your summer been so far? Mine has been filled with music. So far, I’ve seen Billy Idol, The Rolling Stones and Brian Wilson. And tonight, Husband and I will see The Beach Boys! Well, not quite The Beach Boys–it’s more like the Mike Love with Bruce Johnston Show. But there will be no hate for Mr. Love here–I’m ready for some fun, fun, fun!

Take care,
Steph

Oh, Mama, Can This Really Be The End?

She’s alive! ALIVE! Well, sorta…

Hey Y’all,

Yes, yes–I’m sure at this point you good folks decided that I’d abandoned GOMP and with good reason. It’s funny, but once upon a time, I never understood why it took animators so long to draw their comics projects, or why their output was so sporadic. Now I know.

So much is going on at my CN job! We’re preparing for the launch of “We Bare Bears”, a new show debuting this summer. Based off the webcomic “We Three Bears”, the show looks mighty charming from the materials I’ve seen.

Hmm, maybe CN will be inspired to look at MORE webcomics for show ideas…

Take care,
Steph

Hot Night Crash

Hey Y’all,

Oh, Volker—will you ever win?

In this weird and wild economy, it’s silly to complain, but man— full-time work is exhausting for a night owl like me! It’s been many years since I’ve worked a nine-to-five job. For most of my career, I’ve either worked part-time or freelanced. Of course, neither allowed for a generous and/or steady paycheck, but I did have the benefit of a flexible schedule. Drawing until two in the morning? No problem! Go to the the grocery store when everybody else is at work? Why not?

Of course, I can’t get away with it now. But fortunately, my new gig does allow for lots of cartoony drawing, which is quite the benefit in its own right. And the other perks are nice, too—you know—crazy stuff like health insurance and a retirement plan. Ask most artists about their 401K and you may get a blank stare, followed by bitter tears.

Take care,
Steph

Don’t You Forget About Me

Hey Y’all,

Hope everybody is keeping sane this holiday season! We didn’t deck the halls this year, because I moved all my studio stuff into our house. Yep, I have (sort of) officially moved on from Studio Revolver. Now that I’m working full-time at CN, it didn’t make sense to pay rent on a place I wasn’t going to anymore.

Still, I’m grateful to have been a member of Studio Revolver. They welcomed me in when I was going through a very low point in my artistic career. I was surrounded by many amazing, talented artists who offered me both advice and support. I’ll miss hanging out with comics-loving artists, but fortunately they’re just down the street from CN. I predict some lunch-time challenges in my future!

Take care,
Steph

Hello, Hello, I’m Back Again!

7 Comments on Hello, Hello, I’m Back Again!

Hey Y’all,

Wow, it’s been a looong time, hasn’t it? I normally avoid writing posts that are too long or too personal. I prefer that GOMP be a more cheery, fun-loving place on the series of tubes. But I feel obligated to let you good GOMP fans why I was out of commission for so long, so here goes…

The day after my husband’s birthday in August, he was given “Voluntary Severance” package from his employer. Although the offer was pretty generous, it also meant he would be out of a job within a year. This proved to be a tough situation for us, since my husband has usually been the primary bread-winner in our household. What can I say—most cartoonists generally don’t make a ton of money.

Fortunately, I’ve been contracting for Cartoon Network for the better part of the year and they were looking for a full-time illustrator to join their staff the same time the severance packages were in action. Ironically, this is same job position I had over five years ago before being terminated. So I put GOMP aside to work harder at CN, proving my worth. I also took on extra freelance to sock away more emergency cash.

I got lucky! I was hired (or rehired, really) by CN this November. After months of stress, my husband and I are finally able to breathe a little easier.

Now I’m sure some of you GOMP fans are thinking, “Well, that’s all well and good, but what about GOMP, you crazy, flaky broad?!” Well, the truth is a full-time art job not only sucks up a lot of my spare time, but a lot of creative energy. There’s not always a lot left over when after a hard day’s work, fighting Atlanta traffic, doing the chores, etc.

BUT!

The one nice thing about my job is more money. One reason my GOMP updates were spotty for the past several months is that I’d been doing everything myself—my freelance gigs weren’t paying enough for me to pay my colorist. But now I can rehire the intrepid Kevin MacKenzie and get things back on track!

Also, it’s very important to me to finish my current storyline. My goal has always been to make a book of GOMP and I’m not that far away—there’s only one more chapter after this one. After that, I’m not sure what I will decide, but I’m determined to complete this story! And I want to reassure you fans of that.

Thanks for all the support and patience. I know it’s frustrating and disheartening when your favorite comic just sorta disappears without any explanation. It happens all the time! But you have promise from me that GOMP will all wrap up. And who knows? There may even be more!

Thanks and take care,
Steph

Hey Y’all,

Hooray–it’s finally October! As one might guess, October is one of my favorite months. Because how could ANYone hate a month that celebrates monsters and free chocolate?

But I’m mostly happy to see September leave. Last month was not so great for me and my little family. Too much weirdness, too much sad. Here’s hoping October will be an improvement *knock wood*

Looking forward to catching up on some movies, too! I think Husband and I will see “Box Trolls” tomorrow…

Take care,
Steph

Freak Out!

Hey Y’all,

Poor Fay! Let’s hope her head isn’t as soft as her heart.

I apologize for GOMP’s sporadic schedule these days. I’ve been dealing with some very troubling news, which makes it difficult for me to focus or draw anything funny. Not a very good excuse, I know—but there you have it. What can I say? That’s a moody cartoonist for you!

However, I’m doing what I can to move past these issues and re-double my efforts into my cartooning. I have other irons in the fire besides GOMP and hope to share them with you soon. In the meantime, any good vibes for my wacky household are appreciated, And if any of y’all need encouragement, let me know! I’m more than happy to send good vibes your way, too.

Take care,
Steph

Pressure Drop

Hey Y’all,

Whoop-whoop! It’s another GOMP page this week! Looks like things are heating up for Gwen…

After a crazy June and July, my August has been a little quiet so far. Last week, Husband and I checked out the latest RiffTrax event. This time the gang riffed on the ’98 movie “Godzilla”. Man, I had forgotten how horrible it is. I vaguely recall seeing it in the theater (!!), but my brain totally blocked it from my memory.

To make matters worse, the sound was sorta messed up, so Husband and I had a hard time hearing the riffs! Which of course meant we were stuck hearing the actual film. I have soft spot for “movies so bad they’re good”, but “Godzilla ’98” is not that movie. It’s hard to believe the thing grossed $387 million on its release.

Take care,
Steph
